The Circle of Life
Product Development
Icon of Design Winner 2021. Inspired by the recent trend to use curtains as partitions, the Ellipse team built on this and created a more dynamic and flexible approach.
The problem with the current trend is that once you’ve installed the curtain in place, it needs to be uninstalled before it can be moved or adapted if your space changes. And often when you decide to re-use it in another space it needs to be resized to fit.
Our solution? We partnered with Table Place Chairs, a global furniture manufacturer, to come up with a new product that allows users to define space for their current needs with total flexibility to adapt the space in the future.
Together we designed a free-standing curtain partition, that can be circle or oval (or ellipse) to create a room, or arranged in component parts to create a fluid space division. The result is perfect for any space and is far more sustainable than building a room. Less waste is sent to landfill because it doesn’t interact with lighting, flooring or HVAC systems and the lifecycle of the product is infinite due to its adaptability.
To continue the sustainability story of this product we worked alongside Stansons Curtain & Acoustic manufacturers and sourced a fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. We also collaboratively designed a sofa system that follows the shape of the component parts of The Circle of Life, to allow a seating system that can be placed either within or outside of the structure.
This product was designed with the modern workspace in mind - especially after questions around ‘how will people return to the office after the pandemic?’ started to surface.
The Circle of Life is the perfect tool for companies to use to increase the flexibility of their space and potentially reduce their carbon footprint - while configuring workspace settings to encourage people to return to work. We designed it for the office, however it has been specified for Retail and Hospitality projects alike. Continuing to prove the product's total adaptability and sustainable lifespan.
